If your computer feels sluggish when multitasking or stalls while opening memory-intensive applications like Chrome or Premiere Pro, a RAM upgrade is one of the most cost-effective ways to boost performance. Increasing your Random Access Memory (RAM) allows your system to handle more data simultaneously, effectively eliminating performance bottlenecks.
Step 1: Determine Your RAM Compatibility
Before purchasing new modules, you must identify what your motherboard supports. Use a tool like CPU-Z or the Crucial System Scanner to find your current specs. Pay attention to:
- Generation: Is it DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5? These are not cross-compatible.
- Form Factor: Desktops use DIMM modules, while laptops use the smaller SO-DIMM modules.
- Capacity Limits: Check your OS and motherboard's maximum supported RAM (e.g., 32GB, 64GB).
