How to Upgrade Your Laptop RAM: A Complete Hardware Performance Guide

If your laptop feels sluggish when opening multiple browser tabs or running demanding software, a memory upgrade is the most cost-effective solution. Unlike replacing a CPU or GPU, upgrading RAM is a beginner-friendly task that provides an immediate boost to multitasking capabilities. This guide walks you through the entire process, from checking compatibility to the physical installation.

Step 1: Verify RAM Compatibility and Capacity

Before purchasing new hardware, you must determine what your laptop supports. Most modern laptops use SODIMM (Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module) sticks, which are smaller than desktop RAM. Use the following methods to check your specs:

  • Task Manager: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, go to the Performance tab, and click Memory. Check the speed (e.g., 3200 MHz) and how many slots are used.
