Windows 11 is a powerful operating system, but it often comes bundled with unnecessary software (bloatware) and background tracking services (telemetry) that can significantly slow down your PC. If you want a cleaner, faster, and more private experience, this guide will show you exactly how to strip away the clutter.
Step 1: Manually Uninstall Pre-installed Apps
The first step to a leaner system is removing the apps you didn't ask for. Windows 11 often includes games and trial software that consume disk space and resources.
- Open Settings by pressing Windows + I.
- Navigate to Apps and then click on Installed apps.
- Scroll through the list. For any app you don't use (like Disney+, Spotify, or trial games), click the three dots (...) and select Uninstall.
- Note: Some system-critical apps cannot be uninstalled this way; we will address those in the next steps.
Step 2: Disable Diagnostic Telemetry and Data Collection
By default, Windows 11 sends data about your usage to Microsoft. Disabling this can free up background processing power and improve privacy.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
- Toggle the switch for Send optional diagnostic data to Off.
- Scroll down to Tailored experiences and turn it Off to prevent Microsoft from using your data for personalized ads.
- Go to Delete diagnostic data and click Delete to clear existing logs from Microsoft's servers.
Step 3: Use an Automated "Debloat" Script
To remove deep-rooted bloatware that the Settings menu won't touch, professional tech users often use the Chris Titus Tech Windows Utility. This is a highly respected open-source tool.
- Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin).
- Type the following command and press Enter: irm christitus.com/win | iex
- A graphical interface will pop up. Click on the Tweaks tab.
- Select the Desktop preset. This will automatically select recommended settings like Disable Telemetry, Disable WiFi Sense, and Remove OneDrive (optional).
- Click Run Tweaks and wait for the process to finish.
Step 4: Disable Unnecessary Startup Apps
If your computer takes a long time to boot, it is likely because too many programs are trying to start at once.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
- Click the Startup apps tab on the left sidebar.
- Look for apps with a High startup impact.
- Right-click any app that doesn't need to run at boot (like Steam, Cortana, or Edge) and select Disable.
Step 5: Turn Off Personalized Ads and Search Suggestions
Windows 11 often displays "tips" and "suggestions" that are essentially ads within the UI.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > General.
- Turn Off all four options, including Let apps show me personalized ads and Show me suggested content in the Settings app.
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Device usage and ensure all toggles are Off to stop Windows from suggesting ways to use your device based on your activity.
Pro Tip: After performing these steps, always restart your computer to ensure all services are properly terminated and the changes take effect. Your Windows 11 experience should now feel significantly more responsive!
💡 Pro Tip: Keep your software updated to avoid these issues in the future.
