Upgrading your Random Access Memory (RAM) is one of the most cost-effective ways to breathe new life into an aging laptop. If your device struggles with multitasking, lags when opening Chrome tabs, or feels sluggish during video editing, a RAM upgrade is the solution. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of selecting the right hardware and installing it safely.
Step 1: Check Compatibility and Capacity
Before buying new hardware, you must determine what your laptop supports. Not all laptops are upgradeable; some have RAM soldered to the motherboard. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab, and click Memory. Check the 'Slots used' and the 'Form factor' (usually SODIMM for laptops). Research your laptop model online to see the maximum supported capacity (e.g., 16GB, 32GB) and the generation (e.g., DDR4 or DDR5).
Step 2: Gather Your Tools
You don't need much to perform this upgrade, but having the right tools prevents damage.
